Hey Smoke, did I not recently restore your levels? I clearly remember doing so. I think it was Mad who emailed me about it and then I actioned it.

Let me take another look at it...

Yes, unfortunately the way the wars have been implemented is that your characterís level is temporarily downgraded and then restored when you exit the limited level war. Itís why the way you exit differs from one type of war to the next.

Iíll restore Smokeís levels in about 12 hours.

Going forward, Iíll have to look at other options.

Iíve had complaints about archery for a while, so i really need to investigate that one next. I had hoped my revent work on the back-end would have fixed it, but maybe not. Itís top of my Atulos to-do list.

The big drawcard of Atulos Online has always been the Arena. Soon, the Arena is going to be much bigger and have its own dedicated game - ArenaWar.io

Unlike the Arena in Atulos Online, this Arena will be always open. When you enter, you'll start with nothing but the robes on your back and the weapon in your hand and work your way up, fighting for a position in the top 10.

Your ranking will most likely be determined by how much gold you're carrying. As you move through the Arena, you'll find little pieces of gold to pick up, which will slightly increase how much you have. The fastest way to earn gold will be to kill other players and take theirs. You can also swoop in on someone else's kill and grab some gold on the way through, as long as you can get away unscathed!

It's just a title screen so far, and not a fantastic one at that (I'm a programmer, not an artist), but at least it's something! I'll update arenawar.io semi-regularly as I make progress. In a few months, I'll be calling for beta testers.

I entered a war and it appears to be working now.

Please be aware that when three or less players enter the Arena, it's an automatic win for those players. However, this check has to be delayed to give everyone waiting at the gate enough time to enter the Arena, so that the Arena doesn't dish out a win just for getting in first. This delay was previously two minutes, just to make sure everyone got in. It seems that was too long a delay, so I have cut it right back to 15 seconds. If you don't get into the Arena within 15 seconds of the door opening and there are already 3 or less people in there, bad luck! Even if you're the only player in the Arena, if you didn't get in within 15 seconds, you don't get the win.

Going forward, I need to tweak this mechanism a bit. I could make it so no win is awarded until four or more players have entered. That gets rid of the automatic win mechanism and also doesn't hand out wins just for turning up. Let me know what you think!

Update:

The website integration has been fixed. Unfortunately, Steam recently made a breaking change in their OpenID configuration which broke a lot of websites.

I'm looking into the broken Orc/Reaper DLC now.

It looks like some Steam integrations are broken:

* Website steam login (to manager your player accounts)
* Login as Reaper / Orc

Not in the short term. I'm happy to leave it up to the community to grow itself if it chooses to do so.

On the side, very much as a part-time project, I'm working on a web version of just the Arena.

How it will work:
  • Enter your name (no password) and click Play
  • Up to 100 players per server. Players are randomly/geographically allocated to servers.
  • Much larger playing area than the Arena in Atulos Online, to accommodate the larger number of players.
  • Fully server-side gameplay to reduce cheating and make lag a disadvantage instead of an advantage.
  • Ability to build XP, level up, pick up gold, and buy better weapons
  • When you die, you lose everything!

The easiest way to understand this: It's like slither.io, but with Atulos Online characters instead of snakes.

This isn't intended to become the primary game. It's about taking some of the best elements of Atulos Online and remixing them into a fun new game. This could potentially bring people into Atulos Online. There will certainly be links. It could also form the basis for a web-based rewrite of the game. I think it would be better to start with a smaller project like this before trying to rewrite the whole thing in one big go.

Work has already begun. After a couple of weeks of nights and weekends, I have sprite sheets for all the player characters (including the Reaper and Orc) and an initial opening screen. Don't expect to see anything soon because it will be a months-long part-time project, although already underway.
