Announcements / Steam Beta Testers Needed
« on: April 17, 2016, 05:22:17 pm »
Before we release on Steam officially, there is the opportunity for existing players to upgrade to the Steam version and be a part of the Beta testing team.

You will need a Steam account and the Steam client installed on your computer. Essentially the Steam Client replaces the Updater/Launcher. If you don't already have a Steam account then sign up for one, it's free! I would encourage all current Premier users to take this opportunity to upgrade to the Steam version now.

If you are interested please private message me, and during the week I will send you a Beta Key, with instructions on how to redeem the game on Steam and join the Beta testing team.

Announcements / Happy 10th Birthday Atulos Online!
« on: February 04, 2016, 12:03:23 pm »
10 years ago today way back in 2006, Atulos Online was launched. It had been in development on and off since around 2003. From the time it was launched, through the combined efforts of myself and Steve, we have managed to keep it constantly online for the entire 10 year period (aside from the occasional server crash of course!). It has been a crazy journey and one that we intend fully to continue on with.

Check out this comparison screenshot of the first area, the one on the left was taken in 2004 long before the launch:

This is a shot of the crowd getting ready for a level 100 war from back around 2008:

When we launched all of those years ago, the server was hosted at my house on a DSL connection with a static IP address. I traded my car with Cretty for a 2nd computer that I used as the server machine. I eventually moved the server to a data center in the US and the game ran for years with many updates, overhauls and revivals. However, 3 years ago I decided that it was time to close the server down. Times had changed, we had been riding on the extreme popularity of the MMORPG genre, and that era was over. Gaming on the PC had changed, between iOS and Android devices, browser games on sites like Facebook, and the latest generation of consoles, it seemed to me that a stand alone indie PC game like Atulos Online had no future, and I chatted with Steve and told him it was time to close the project down. We had been running the game for 7 years and that was a really good run for an indie online RPG. It had been a fantastic journey, but now it was over.

However! Steve still envisioned a future for the game, and in the light of me wanting to leave he offered to take it over, and Steve became the owner of Atulos Online. He had always been a part of it, right back from the beginning of development, and he had some ideas that he wanted to implement in the long term. In Steve's mind the journey wasn't over.

Almost 3 years later the game was still running, and was now using a Java server that Steve had built from the ground up, but the game client was having increasing problems running on modern computers, particularly with Windows 10. I received a message from Steve informing me about the issues the game client was having, and I returned to the project temporarily to update the client to be compatible with modern computers, including Windows 10. The update was a real blast of nostalgia for me, and I felt the desire returning to help revive Atulos. Steve and I had a meeting and we discussed long into the night how the game could have a future. It was decided that if the game was to have a future, it would need to be released on the biggest PC gaming distribution platform on the internet, Steam. With this new goal in mind, I returned to the project indefinitely as the lead developer of the game client, and Steve assumed the role as the lead developer of the server and website. The quest to put Atulos on Steam had begun.

So here we are 10 years since the launch of the game, more passionate than ever to develop Atulos Online and continue it into the future. But there is more to it than just development, as this is a community as much as it is a game. Every one of you who is reading this post is part of that community and is part of building this game. We all have our roles to play, and if we come together as a community we can keep this game going for another 10 years!

Announcements / Minor Update 2.7.4
« on: January 31, 2016, 11:45:37 pm »
Minor Update 2.7.4 is out.

- Movement system fix. Clicking on 'Exit' at shops and inns was causing the player to move. This only started after the last movement system update, so we have fixed it now.

- Steam Greenlight voting button added to the login screen. The Greenlight campaign is extremely important for the future of the game. If we get enough votes the game will become available on Steam (it will still be available at too).

- Other minor fixes

Announcements / Minor Update 2.7.3
« on: January 27, 2016, 08:58:15 am »
Minor Update 2.7.3 is out.

-The main addition to this update is the stats have been right justified and expanded. Specifically this means the amount of Gold displays correctly, if you have a huge amount of it, rather than cutting off the extra digit.

- There is a new NPC in the first area that explains how to enter shops.

- A bug has been fixed that prevented entry to the Shrine in certain rare situations.

- Other minor fixes

Although you can't access them yet, there is a new set of defense items in the game called Magma items. They allow the player to enter areas with Lava! The new areas with Lava will be out in update 2.8, along with the new Magma items.

- The 'Joining Area' text now actually lists the area you are joining

Arena Wars / Arena War Seasons to be Reactivated
« on: November 23, 2015, 09:09:56 am »
The current Arena War Season has been a long one. In the past an Arena War Season lasted until a guild reached 100 wins, and was at least 2 wins ahead of the nearest guild. In Season 148 (the current Season), the White Knights (WK) are currently on 365 wins. This season will end in the next few days, the White Knights will have their win added to the Hall of Fame and the All Time Guild Board, and the 100 win seasons will return again.

To make things more interesting as we are building the community, in the Arena we will be adding the old Arena enemy bots back! Do you have the skill to beat a bot in combat?

Announcements / Update 2.6 Development Underway
« on: November 21, 2015, 10:01:07 am »
As I am sure many of you are already aware, update 2.5 was just released. The focus of that update was to get the game running smoothly on modern hardware and operating systems, particularly with the release of Windows 10.

However, the next update is already in development and will include a previously unreleased areas!

These new areas are being designed for high level players, and will coincide with an increase of the level cap from 320 to 350. In these new areas players will be able to level up faster than by grinding the Mercenary Quests, so high level players can spend their time doing something new while attempting to reach the new cap of level 350.

Steve is continuing his work on updating the server to enable the server to cope with larger numbers of players, and is also in the later stages of developing a new Website for the game. Along with this plans are in action to bring a fresh new wave of players into the game. More details will be provided about that at a later date.

It is safe to say that the development of Atulos Online is in full motion again, as we approach the 10 year anniversary of the game being online!

Greetings fellow Atulos players, Camm here with news concerning the future of Atulos Online!

The latest update includes:

This update marks my return to the Atulos development team, and discussions are in progress to ensure an exciting future for Atulos Online, as we approach the 10 year anniversary of the game.
